Portsmouth International Port is celebrating today after a double win at the industry Wave Awards last night (Monday 13 November) having scooped Best Port and the Best Environmental Innovation.
Dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the cruise industry, the Wave Awards brings together international cruise lines, ports, travel agents and destinations to recognise the very best of the UK’s cruise sector.
Voted by industry experts, Portsmouth faced serious competition from international ports for Best Port, and major organisations for Best Environmental Innovation.
Portsmouth launched its brand new terminal this summer and is heading for a record breaking year for cruise calls. This also follows the announcement the port is on track to be the first UK port to provide shore power across multiple berths for multiple ships, after securing UK government funding to deliver an innovative sustainable energy project by 2025.
The prestigious event, in partnership with Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, was hosted by comedian Joel Dommet at the Dorchester Hotel in London where nominees were invited to a black tie dinner and a star studded night of awards and entertainment.
Andrew Williamson Portsmouth International Port’s head of cruise and ferry said: “It was an honour to represent Portsmouth and pick up not one, but two awards, Best Environmental Innovation and Best Port. The Wave Awards is a spectacular night for the cruise industry, celebrating the best in the business and rewarding the people who bring excellence across the sector.
I am immensely proud to be part of a team that has worked incredibly hard to grow year after year, with sustainability and innovative central to everything we do. To be recognised for everyone’s efforts is hugely appreciated and gives us the determination to carry on building on our success. Alongside our port partners we believe it’s important to consistently go the extra mile to deliver an award winning experience for every guest visiting Portsmouth.”
Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Portsmouth City Council Cabinet Member responsible for the port said: “Portsmouth has been going from strength to strength, realising its cruise ambitions and as a council owned port we have invested to make sure our city and region benefit from the opportunities this brings.
“To be celebrated on the international stage as the Best Port is a hugely impressive achievement, and to be known for our environmental innovation demonstrates that our commitment to sustainability is recognised and appreciated by the industry. This is only just the start and I am looking forward to seeing what happens as the port continues to develop and build on its success.”
Judging for the awards took place in July, with a number of experts from across the industry deciding on the shortlisted businesses.
Speaking on the judging day, Marella Cruises’ managing director, Chris Hackney, said: “The calibre and variety of the submissions really means you have the ‘crème de la crème’.”
